Extensions FAQ
Will the extensions damage my hair?
Everyone naturally sheds approximately 100 hairs a day and this still happens when you have your extensions in. As the hairs are held in the bond, they can tangle up if the extensions are left in too long. To avoid this the extensions should be separated every day using your fingers. When the extensions are removed, all this loose hair will come out with the extension hair, and this is where people panic. This is normal and if you brush your hair every day and keep what comes out over 3 months you’d see it is the same amount that comes out when you remove the extensions. Your natural hair will feel thin compared to the extensions you had in, but this is also normal.
How many extensions will I need?
Everyone’s hair is different, and therefore every client has a different set of extensions. I will custom fit them for you so you don’t have too few or too many. As a general rule, the thicker your hair the more extensions you need to create length as you need to have the balance correct. Too few extensions and it will look stringy and fake, too many and it will look bushy and be hard to look after. For just adding volume or adding colour ¼ - ½ of a head is normally enough. For a little amount of length and volume ½-1/3 is needed and for adding more length and volume ¾ to a full head is needed. Extensions are also available in singles for those wishing to add specifics amounts to their hair in streaks etc.
Will they look natural?
The extensions will be put in to suit your own hair. The hairline is always left out as is the parting and crown (with a full head) so the bonded area is never seen. The colour will always be matched perfectly (my speciality!) and layered perfectly to blend in with your natural hair. If you have a one length bob, you will need layers putting in first as it’s almost impossible to blend a bob perfectly unless your hair is extremely fine. I will always tell you what I think is best for your own hair, as it’s not usually sensible to go from a 4” haircut to waist length tresses as it doesn’t blend in very well. Also it’s not wise to put dead straight extensions in wavy/curly hair which is hard to blow dry. If you really want straight hair then it’s best to have the slightly waved human hair which can be straightened along with your own, but if your own hair gets damp and starts to wave then at least the extensions will do the same. The most common mistake with extensions is not having enough layers in them. This is when you see someone and you know they are wearing fake hair. The hair can be layered to blend in but still left to look long – layers don’t need to look like you have a christmas tree on your head!
How do I look after them?
Both the human & synthetic hair extensions are easy to wash with their own recommended products. The extensions should never be rubbed together when wet or towed dried as this can cause tangling. I will explain everything to you when you get your hair done, as some styles need different after care to others.
Is my hair long enough/suitable for extensions?
Your hair needs to be at least 4” for both types of extensions but the longer the hair is on top the better. If you have extremely fine hair then I will advise you of the best style to have done in order for the extensions to be invisible. If you suffer with alopecia or trichotillomania I can still do your hair but you will need a consultation beforehand to determine the best style for you. I have done many clients with “problem” hair over the years and they have all been delighted with the results.
Do dread extensions damage your hair and will they need to be cut out of my hair?
No! The dreads are simply plaited into decent size sections of your hair so cause no damage while being worn. To remove the dreads the rubber band holding them is simply snipped off and the hair un-plaited from around the dread. Your hair may have some tangling at the roots but this is normal and will comb out easily. I advise they are not left in longer than 10-12 weeks to minimise the tangling of dead hair.
