Dread extensions page

Double ended dread extensions are the easiest and best way to wear a dreaded style. Unlike the old methods where your hair is backcombed and dreaded along with the extensions, this method means your hair is completely hidden and not damaged at all. The dreads are made before hand to your own specifications and plaited into your own hair in small sections all over the head. I use a method which means your own hair won’t be seen "criss-crossed" around coloured accent dreads as the half of the dread which is plaited always matches your own hair. To install them in should take no longer than 1-2 hours and they last up to 12 weeks. They can then be removed, washed and re-used. You will need to take them out after 12 weeks as your hair will start to tangle and dread and this needs to be combed out before it becomes permanent.

Wrapped dread extensions are put in with a different method. The loose synthetic hair is plaited into your own hair and then wrapped with one end to completely cover the plait. The ends are backcombed and the whole dread is steamed. This creates a stick like dread and you have one dread per section of hair unlike the double ended dreads where you have two. All your hair can be covered up except the very root which will always show so it’s important to have a matching base colour as well as the accent colours. The wrapped dreads last 3-4 months and are not re-useable. These dreads are heavier than the double ended dreads and should not be done on clients with very fine hair. They are also more suitable for shorter hair as to remove wrapped dreads from long hair can cause damage.

Natural (permanent) dreads can be created in two ways. Either the natural hair can be dreaded on it’s own using special dread wax and backcombing, or human hair extensions can be added first and then all dreaded. When hair is dreaded it looses length so shoulder length hair will end up being much shorter and mid back hair will end up as shoulder length dreads. Using human hair to lengthen your hair first means you will end up with nice long permanent dreads.  I use the Knotty Boy™ range of products to give you neat well backcombed dreads, but they take a lot of looking after to coax them into properly matted dreads. Once your hair is finished it will look like dreads but after 3-4 months they will look much tighter and neater.
